Social Sciences: Geography and History

At Edison Primary, Social Sciences help children understand the world around them by exploring people, places, and how communities work. Through age-appropriate learning, children begin to ask questions about their own lives, their local area, and the wider United Kingdom. They learn to share ideas, listen to others, and build respectful relationships as they discover similarities and differences between communities.

In lessons, children may explore familiar places such as their school, home, and local neighbourhood, learning how maps, photographs, and simple data can help us understand geography. They also look at everyday life and how people make choices, work together, and follow rules. Activities may include storytelling, role play, class discussions, and simple investigations, helping children develop curiosity and confidence in explaining what they have learned.

We encourage parents to support Social Sciences at home by talking with children about the places they visit, the people they meet, and the decisions communities make. Simple prompts such as “What do you notice here?” or “How do people help each other?” can lead to meaningful conversations. By working together, we help children develop knowledge, vocabulary, and skills that support their learning across the curriculum and prepare them to become thoughtful, active citizens.
