Intent for our Computing Curriculum
At Edison Primary School, pupils develop coding, digital content creation and problem-solving skills through Purple Mash.
Our Computing Curriculum fosters logical thinking, resilience and independent learning.
Online safety is embedded throughout, enabling pupils to use technology confidently, safely and responsibly.
Implementation
EYFS Implementation
In the Early Years, computing is taught through play-based activities that develop children’s problem-solving, logical thinking and curiosity. Using Mini Mash, Bee-Bots and Chromebooks, children begin to develop early coding, sequencing and digital skills while exploring technology as part of Understanding the World. Collaborative computing activities also support Communication and Language through discussion and teamwork, and Personal, Social and Emotional Development by encouraging turn-taking, resilience and cooperation. Using a range of digital devices helps develop Physical Development, particularly fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Children also learn simple online safety rules, helping them to use technology safely, responsibly and with confidence from an early age.
KS1 Implementation
In Key Stage 1, pupils use Purple Mash and Chromebooks to develop coding, digital creativity and problem-solving skills. They explore algorithms, create digital content and begin debugging simple programs. Online safety is embedded throughout, helping pupils to keep personal information safe and use technology respectfully and responsibly.
KS2 Implementation
In Key Stage 2, pupils build on prior learning through Purple Mash and Chromebooks, developing programming, data handling, digital content creation and problem-solving skills. They create increasingly complex digital projects and solve problems independently. Online safety remains central to learning, enabling pupils to become safe, responsible and confident digital citizens.
Impact for Computing
Children leave Edison as confident, capable users of technology who can code, create digital content and solve problems independently. They think logically, persevere when a program does not work as expected, and debug with increasing skill and resilience.
Above all, our pupils know how to keep themselves and others safe online, use technology respectfully and responsibly, and make thoughtful decisions about their digital lives — knowledge that will serve them well beyond primary school.
