Intent for Reading & Phonics
Pupils of Edison Primary School will develop a strong love of reading alongside the fluency and comprehension skills needed to become confident, independent readers.
Pupils will develop a rich and varied vocabulary and the ability to read a wide range of texts with increasing accuracy and fluency.

EYFS Implementation
In EYFS, children begin their reading journey by developing the early skills needed to become successful readers. They learn to recognise sounds, blend sounds to read words and develop an understanding of what they have read through engaging stories, rhymes and discussion.
Alongside daily reading opportunities within the classroom, children are taught to read through daily Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics lessons. These structured sessions provide systematic synthetic phonics teaching, enabling children to develop confidence, accuracy and fluency in early reading.
Children also enjoy sharing a wide range of high-quality texts throughout the day, helping to develop vocabulary, language and a love of reading.
KS1 Implementation
Reading continues to be taught through the English curriculum, where pupils develop the National Curriculum reading skills through carefully chosen core texts. Lessons focus on developing:
- Vocabulary
- Retrieval
- Inference
- Prediction
- Explanation
- Summarising
- Making comparisons within and across texts
Pupils continue to learn to read through Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics lessons until they have completed the programme and become fluent readers.
Once pupils have completed the RWI programme, they move on to developing more advanced comprehension skills through whole-class reading, discussion of a range of high-quality texts and written responses. These lessons encourage pupils to think deeply about what they read and to justify their ideas using evidence from the text
KS2 Implementation
In Key Stage 2, pupils build upon the reading foundations established in earlier years through the study of a diverse range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Through carefully selected texts, pupils are taught to analyse, interpret and respond to what they read while further developing the National Curriculum reading skills, including:
- Vocabulary
- Retrieval
- Inference
- Prediction
- Explanation
- Summarising
- Comparison
These skills are explicitly taught through engaging core texts and are developed across a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
For pupils who require additional support with reading, we provide Fresh Start, an intervention programme designed to accelerate reading progress and build confidence and fluency.
In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils also participate in dedicated reading lessons. These lessons provide further opportunities to develop comprehension skills, explore increasingly challenging texts and engage in high-quality discussion and written responses, enabling pupils to think critically and deepen their understanding of what they read.
Impact for Reading
Pupils will become confident readers who can articulate their ideas and opinions about texts, evaluate language choices, and read for both meaning and pleasure
