Core Subjects
English, mathematics and science form the foundation of everything our children learn.
In English, we teach systematic synthetic phonics from the very start of Reception so that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader as quickly as possible, and we build from there towards a genuine love of books and the ability to write clearly and imaginatively for a range of purposes.
In mathematics, we teach for deep understanding rather than quick answers, so that children develop fluency in number, reason mathematically and can apply what they know to solve unfamiliar problems with confidence.
Science, as you would expect at Edison, is the subject closest to our heart. Our children work as scientists — asking questions, predicting, testing, observing carefully and drawing conclusions from what they find — and we make sure they leave us with a strong body of scientific knowledge as well as the curiosity to keep asking why.
Together, these three subjects give our children the knowledge, language and thinking they need to succeed across the whole curriculum and beyond.
