Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium Grant is additional funding provided by the government to help schools improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

At Edison Primary School we receive this funding for children who are eligible for free school meals, or who have been at any point in the past six years, for children who are looked after or previously looked after, and for children from service families.

We use it to remove barriers to learning:

through targeted teaching and small-group support,
high-quality staff training, and
wider opportunities such as enrichment activities, trips and access to the curriculum beyond the classroom.

Our Pupil Premium strategy statement, published below, sets out how the funding is spent, the difference it is making and our plans for the year ahead.

If you think your child may be eligible, please speak to Mrs Dusanjh (our admissions, attendance and family liaison officer) in confidence — registering benefits your child and brings valuable additional funding into the school.

What's changing from September 2026

From September 2026, free school meals are available to every child whose family receives Universal Credit. This is a welcome change and means many more of our families will qualify.

It is worth knowing that free school meals and Pupil Premium are now two separate things: your child may be entitled to a free meal under the new, wider rules without the school automatically receiving Pupil Premium funding, as that funding still follows the previous, narrower income criteria.

This is why we ask every family to complete an eligibility check with the local authority, even if you already know your child will get a free lunch, and even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and receives a free meal anyway.

One short application covers both, it is checked confidentially, and it may bring additional funding to the school that we use to support your child's learning.
