How to become a Trustee

Becoming a Trustee for Edison Primary is a meaningful way to support children’s education and strengthen the school’s long-term direction. Trustees play a key role in governance: setting the school’s strategic priorities, holding leaders to account, and ensuring the school meets its legal and safeguarding responsibilities. If you are a parent of a primary-age child, you may also bring valuable insight from a family perspective, helping to ensure decisions reflect the needs of pupils and the wider school community.

To get started, familiarise yourself with how school governance works in the UK. Trustees are responsible for oversight rather than day-to-day management, so it helps to understand the difference between governance and leadership. You may be asked to review policies, consider budgets, support decisions through committees, and contribute to evaluating school performance. It is also important to be aware of expected conduct, confidentiality, and safeguarding standards, including any training requirements and the legal checks that may be carried out before appointment.

You can ask what skills and experience are most helpful, such as finance, education, safeguarding, HR, or community engagement, and whether there are induction and training plans in place.
