Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Intent for PSHE
At Edison Primary School, PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw scheme, placing children’s wellbeing, happiness and personal growth at the heart of everything we do.
We aim for every child to feel safe, valued and heard, developing the confidence to understand themselves and the world around them. The curriculum supports pupils in building self-awareness, forming positive and respectful relationships, and learning how to make thoughtful, responsible decisions.
Children are encouraged to see their own worth, feel included in their school community, and grow into kind, confident individuals. These life skills help them thrive not only in school, but also beyond it.
Implementation
EYFS Implementation
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE is embedded throughout daily learning and taught through the Jigsaw scheme. Learning is closely linked to the Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) area of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, helping children develop self-confidence, build positive relationships and understand their feelings. Through stories, discussions, play and circle time, pupils learn to recognise emotions, manage behaviour, show kindness and respect, and become valued members of the school community. This provides the foundations for positive wellbeing and successful learning.
KS1 Implementation
In Key Stage 1, PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw scheme, building on the foundations established in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Learning develops pupils’ understanding of the six Jigsaw themes: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Through stories, discussions and collaborative activities, pupils learn to recognise and manage their emotions, develop positive relationships, make healthy and safe choices, and show kindness and respect towards others. This supports children in becoming confident, responsible and active members of the school community.KS2 Implementation
In Key Stage 2, PSHE continues to be taught through the Jigsaw scheme, following a progressive curriculum that revisits and builds upon previous learning. Pupils deepen their understanding of health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world through discussion, reflection and collaborative learning. They develop resilience, emotional awareness and the confidence to make informed decisions, while learning to respect different viewpoints and understand their responsibilities within school and the wider community. This equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to stay safe, lead healthy lives and thrive as responsible citizens in modern Britain.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) forms part of the Changing Me unit and is taught to every year group during the Summer 2 half term. The curriculum is age-appropriate, builds progressively on prior learning and ensures pupils develop the knowledge and understanding needed to build healthy relationships, understand changes as they grow, and keep themselves safe.
Impact for PSHE
Children will see their own worth, feel included in their school community, and grow into kind, confident individuals. These life skills help them thrive not only in school, but also beyond it.
