Religious Education (RE)

Intent for RE

At Edison Primary School, the RE curriculum is inclusive and progressive, developing pupils’ understanding of religions, beliefs and worldviews. It promotes respect, curiosity and empathy, helping children value diversity locally and globally while supporting SMSC development and British Values. 

Learning is enriched through visits, visitors, festivals, and discussions. Pupils build knowledge over time, use subject-specific vocabulary, and explore similarities and differences respectfully.

Implementation

EYFS Implementation 

In EYFS, RE is taught through a play-based, enquiry-led approach linked to Understanding the World. Children explore different religions, beliefs and celebrations through stories, role play, artefacts, music and discussion. Learning builds on children's own experiences, develops key vocabulary and encourages curiosity, respect and an appreciation of diversity. Children are given opportunities to ask questions, share their own ideas and begin to understand that people have different beliefs and traditions. 

KS1 Implementation 

In KS1, pupils develop their understanding of Christianity and other world religions through carefully sequenced, enquiry-based lessons. High-quality texts, artefacts, visitors, festivals and visits enrich learning and bring religions to life. 

Teachers use questioning, discussion and retrieval practice to build knowledge, develop subject-specific vocabulary and encourage pupils to make simple connections between different beliefs and their own experiences. Lessons promote respect, curiosity and understanding of the diverse world around them. 

KS2 Implementation 

In KS2, pupils deepen their understanding of religions and worldviews through progressive, enquiry-based learning that builds on prior knowledge. They compare beliefs, explore religious texts, traditions and practices, and reflect on how faith influences individuals and communities. 

Learning is enriched through visitors, educational visits and meaningful discussions, enabling pupils to think critically and appreciate different perspectives. Retrieval practice, subject-specific vocabulary and regular assessment ensure knowledge is secure while supporting all pupils to articulate their ideas with confidence, respect and empathy. 

 Impact for RE 

Pupils will show secure understanding of religions and worldviews, demonstrate respect and tolerance, and confidently express ideas. They leave our school as reflective, open-minded individuals prepared for a diverse society.
