Physical Education (PE)
Intent for PE
At Edison Primary School, PE is delivered through the Get Set 4 PE scheme, helping every child grow in confidence, physical competence and teamwork. We want pupils to enjoy being active and to discover the value of leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
The curriculum nurtures resilience, determination and a strong sense of fair play, giving children the confidence to try new skills, keep going when things are challenging, and celebrate both individual and team success. Pupils experience a wide range of sports and physical activities, building not only their ability but also their enjoyment and love of movement.
This positive approach aims to support strong outcomes across the school, with all pupils making good progress or better.
Implementation
EYFS Implementation
In Reception, physical development is an integral part of the Early Years curriculum and is delivered through the Get Set 4 PE scheme, alongside regular opportunities for active learning indoors and outdoors. Children develop confidence, control and coordination through activities that promote running, jumping, balancing, throwing and imaginative movement. Learning is linked to the Early Learning Goals, with activities providing appropriate challenges and supporting communication, cooperation and positive relationships. This strong foundation prepares children for the progression of skills in Key Stage 1.
KS1 Implementation
In Key Stage 1, pupils build on the fundamental movement skills developed in Reception through a broad range of sports and physical activities. Skills, knowledge and understanding are carefully scaffolded between year groups, with S.T.E.P. (Space, Task, Equipment and People) differentiation ensures every child is supported and challenged. Pupils learn, practise and refine skills before applying them in individual, paired and team activities. They begin to understand simple tactics, evaluate their own performance and recognise how regular physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
KS2 Implementation
In Key Stage 2, pupils develop greater technical proficiency and tactical awareness through a progressive curriculum that follows the local sporting calendar, preparing them for intra- and inter-school competitions. Skills are built sequentially across each year group, with S.T.E.P. (Space, Task, Equipment and People) differentiation providing appropriate challenges for all learners. Pupils apply skills in competitive and cooperative situations, analyse performance to identify strengths and next steps, and develop leadership, teamwork and decision-making. Throughout the curriculum, they deepen their understanding of the importance of physical activity for lifelong health and wellbeing.
Years 4 and 5 also take part in swimming lessons, enabling pupils to develop water confidence, improve swimming technique and work towards meeting the National Curriculum expectations for swimming and water safety.
