Intent for Global Learning

At Edison Primary School, Global Learning develops pupils as responsible global citizens, promoting respect, empathy and understanding of issues such as sustainability, fairness and social justice. The progressive curriculum uses real-world issues, rich texts, events and partnerships. Pupil voice and pupil leadership roles promote respect, kindness and responsibility.

Pupils understand global issues, value diversity and make links to learning. They show confidence, responsibility and a commitment to positive action locally and globally.

Implementation

Fundamental British Values are introduced through everyday routines and whole-school British Values assemblies.

Pupils learn about Black History throughout the year, and take part in Picture News discussions. Our school’s annual Culture Day, helping them develop curiosity, kindness and respect for others.

Rich texts, discussions and whole school events, encourage pupils to value diversity, think critically and make meaningful connections between local and global issues, preparing them to become responsible global citizens.

Religious education is taught to all pupils at Edison Primary School, and we hope that every family will feel comfortable with our approach: RE here is about learning about religions and worldviews, not learning to follow one, and it is taught in a way that respects the beliefs of every child in our diverse community. Parents and carers do, however, have a legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of religious education, and you do not have to give a reason for doing so.

If you are considering this, please contact the Headteacher, who will be glad to talk through what your child would be learning — many concerns can be resolved once the content is clear.

A request to withdraw should be made in writing so that we have a clear record, and it will remain in place until you tell us otherwise.

Children who are withdrawn will be supervised in school during RE lessons, although we are not able to provide alternative teaching, and responsibility for any replacement religious education rests with the family.
