Design Technology

Intent for Design and Technology 

At Edison Primary School, pupils follow the Kapow Design and Technology scheme, which enriches learning through purposeful, hands-on projects. 

Pupils develop practical skills, creativity and problem-solving, alongside an understanding of design, making and evaluation. 

The curriculum encourages resilience, innovation and the application of technical knowledge in real-life contexts.

Implementation

EYFS Implementation

In the Early Years, Design and Technology is delivered through the Kapow scheme using practical, play-based experiences. Children explore, design, make and evaluate simple creations using a range of materials, tools and construction resources.

Through hands-on activities, children develop creativity, problem-solving and fine motor skills while making links to Expressive Arts and Design, Physical Development and Understanding the World.

Children are encouraged to share ideas, test solutions and reflect on their creations, developing Communication and Language and Personal, Social and Emotional Development through collaboration and perseverance. 

KS1 Implementation

In Key Stage 1, pupils follow the Kapow Design and Technology scheme through practical, hands-on projects that encourage creativity, exploration and problem-solving. Pupils develop their designing, making and evaluating skills by exploring mechanisms, structures, textiles, and food and nutrition. They learn to select and use appropriate materials and tools, share their ideas, test solutions and reflect on their work. Through these experiences, pupils build confidence, resilience and the ability to improve their designs. 

KS2 Implementation

In Key Stage 2, pupils build on their prior learning through the Kapow Design and Technology scheme, engaging in increasingly challenging practical projects. Pupils develop and apply technical knowledge across a range of contexts, including mechanical systems, electrical systems, structures, textiles, and cooking and nutrition. They are taught to research, design, make and evaluate products, refining their practical skills and using feedback to improve their final outcomes. Through collaborative problem-solving and critical thinking, pupils develop independence, creativity and confidence as designers and makers. 

Impact for Design and Technology

Our pupils leave Edison as resourceful, creative designers and makers who can research, design, make and evaluate products for a real purpose. They apply technical knowledge across a range of contexts, select the right materials and tools with confidence, and use feedback to improve their work rather than settling for a first attempt. Through purposeful, hands-on projects, children develop the resilience, innovation and practical skill to see a problem in the world around them and set about solving it.
