Edison Primary School

Early Years

Intent

At Edison Primary, our Early Years provision is designed to give children a strong start in school life. We focus on helping children feel safe, valued and confident as they settle into routines, make friends and build independence.

Our classrooms are calm, welcoming and carefully organised, with clear expectations that support children’s learning through play.

We aim build their strong starting points for our pupils as they begin their lifelong learning journey. Every child has access to a broad and enriched curriculum which is engaging and nurturing.

Implementation

We provide a curriculum that blends learning through play with purposeful teaching. Children experience a wide range of activities that develop communication and language, early literacy and numeracy, physical skills and understanding of the world around them. Adults observe closely and plan next steps, so each child can progress at their own pace while meeting the expectations of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

They will learn the ability to self direct their own learning and become independent learners who will learn new skills and build on their existing knowledge.  One of our main focuses is on early communication, language, and thinking skills to support our pupils to become clear and confident speakers, who can connect with others through play.

Our outdoor learning is embedded daily, supporting physical development - gross motor skills, imagination, and understanding of the world. There is a strong SEND provision with tailored resources, personalised rewards, and targeted interventions.

Partnership with parents is at the heart of our approach. We share regular updates about children’s progress, celebrate achievements and invite you to contribute through everyday experiences at home. By working together, we help children build the habits and skills they need for future learning, including curiosity, resilience and a positive attitude towards school.

Impact

Our children will develop positive and stimulating foundational skills that prepare them for lifelong learning and development, and independent skills.
