Edison Primary School

Music

Intent for Music

At Edison Primary School, we foster a lifelong love, appreciation and understanding of music by providing a broad, inclusive curriculum that develops creativity, confidence and essential musical skills (performing, composing and listening).

Implementation for Music

Our Music curriculum at Edison Primary School is delivered by a Music Specialist Teacher from Sing Education, ensuring every child is actively engaged and inspired.

EYFS Implementation

Informed by Development Matters, our music curriculum includes singing and instrumental activities, helping children develop confidence while exploring rhythm, pulse and melody. Pupils become attentive listeners, recognising and describing patterns within music and responding to a range of musical experiences. Through practical, enjoyable learning, children build strong musical foundations that create a lasting enthusiasm and prepare them for future musical success.

KS1 Implementation

In Key Stage 1, children use their voices expressively and creatively through songs, chants and rhymes, play tuned and untuned instruments musically, listen with concentration to high-quality live and recorded music, and experiment with creating, selecting and combining sounds.

Pupils actively participate in practical music-making, developing confidence, creativity and performance skills. This weekly specialist teaching ensures every child experiences success in music and develops knowledge and skills with long-lasting impact.

KS2 Implementation

In Key Stage 2, pupils perform in solo and ensemble contexts with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression, improvise and compose for a range of purposes, recall sounds with increasing aural memory, and learn to use and understand staff and other musical notations.

Every lesson includes singing and instrumental work, with pupils singing a broad repertoire and playing melodies on tuned percussion, melodic instruments and keyboards.

Impact for Music

Our pupils achieve age-related expectations in music and leave Edison as confident, curious musicians who perform with others, think critically about what they hear, and carry an enjoyment of music beyond primary school.
