Year 2 Explore Henri Rousseau

During the Spring Term,  in our Year 2 Art lesson, pupils explored the work of Henri Rousseau, focusing on his vibrant jungle scenes filled with detailed leaves, plants, and Animals.

Children learned that Rousseau was inspired by nature, even though he never visited a real jungle, using his imagination to create rich, layered compositions.

Linking to their Science learning on plants, pupils carefully observed different leaf shapes, patterns, and textures. They practised sketching techniques such as line drawing, shading, and adding detail to capture the unique features of plants.

Using Rousseau’s style as inspiration, the children experimented with overlapping shapes and repeated patterns to create their own jungle-inspired sketches. These lessons  encouraged creativity while developing observational drawing skills and a deeper understanding of how artists use the natural world as inspiration.

Pupils created amazing double-page spreads completing an Artist study. Well done to Year 2!
