Across the school, our children have been using their science skills to observe, explore and study plants and living things. Read more to find out what Year 2 and Year 3 have been learning.

Year 2 have been busy investigating what plants need to survive, and they did a fantastic job observing these changes first‑hand. Pupils learned that plants need warmth, water and light to grow healthily. To test this, they placed one plant in a dark cupboard and another on the windowsill. They were amazed to discover that the plant in the cupboard actually grew taller, but this led to an important discussion. Although it was taller, its stem was pale and weak, unlike the strong, healthy green plant growing in the light. This helped pupils understand that healthy growth depends on the right conditions, not just height.

Year 3 did a great job this week with their brilliant plant‑dissection work. Pupils carefully examined real plants, separating each part and identifying its role in helping the plant grow and survive. They confidently explained how roots absorb water, how stems transport nutrients, how leaves make food and how flowers support reproduction.
